August 27, (THEWILL) – Nigerian heavyweight boxer, Efe Ajagba, picked up a controversial disqualification victory over Kazakhstan’s Zhan Kossobutskiy in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Ajagba, who now resides in Houston, was awarded the win after Kossobutskiy was disqualified for repeatedly landing low blows. The fight started competitively, with Kossobutskiy stunning Ajagba in the opening round. However, Ajagba began taking control in the second round, landing heavy body shots on his opponent.
Controversy struck in the third when Kossobutskiy landed two blatant low blows, leading to a point deduction. More controversy followed in the fourth when Kossobutskiy again went below the belt, sending Ajagba down. Referee Chris Flores had seen enough, disqualifying Kossobutskiy and giving the win to Ajagba.
With the victory, Ajagba picked up the WBC Silver heavyweight title and will look to continue his climb back into title contention. The 29-year-old is now on a three fight win streak after losing to Frank Sanchez last October.
While not the dominant performance he was looking for, Ajagba will take the win and belt. He now sets his sights on bigger matchups as he tries to prove himself as one of the top heavyweights in the world.
