BEVERLY HILLS, January 12, (THEWILL) – The Majority Leader of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, on Thursday disclosed that he had no choice but to accept his new role because it was the decision of his party.
Lawan assumed the position of the Senate Leader amid drama on Tuesday after the All Progressives Congress, APC, caucus at the upper legislative chamber removed Ali Ndume from the position.

Addressing the Senate Press Corps at the National Assembly shortly after plenary, he stated that the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has complied with the directive of the APC and the national leader of the party, President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said, “What happened on Tuesday was an art of God. I was not even aware of what happened until Monday night when some body from the All Progressive Congress national headquarters called me that there  are going to effect a change in the senate leader.

“I didn’t have a choice because that is the position of my party , the leader of the party insisted on the party supremacy until it happened on Tuesday.

“This is my colleagues carrying me along and I have to carry them along. This is a new challenge to me having watched other leaders since 1999. I am going to be committed and dedicated, I will give everyone attention.

“My selection is to reconcile our differences, to unite and give this chamber a peaceful chance to support the good and laudable policies of our government.

“It is a position that is supposed to unite the senate in terms of the multi party nature of the national assembly for us to work together.’’

The Senate Leader added that he would ensure that “the senate developed a system whereby executive communication, especially bills, were good products that would be easily digested.”

While expressing gratitude to his colleagues over their decision to do the right thing, he promised to ensure that bills and communication from the executive are marketable.

He pledged to work for the stability of the Senate as well as protect the interest of all senators irrespective of party affiliation, while soliciting for the corporation of his colleagues.
