January 23, (THEWILL) – A dramatic stoppage-time fightback from Mozambique saw them salvage an unlikely 2-2 draw against Ghana in their final Group B match at the Africa Cup of Nations on Monday night. Despite leading 2-0 and looking set to progress, the Black Stars conceded twice in added time, meaning they finished third in the group on two points.

Ghana made a strong start, winning a soft penalty after 15 minutes when Joseph Paintsil drew a foul. Captain Jordan Ayew converted to give them the lead. They deservedly doubled their advantage with another Ayew spot-kick midway through the second half after a Mohammed Kudus shot struck a Mozambique arm.

The Mambas struggled to create chances until the closing stages. First, Geny Catamo scored an 86th-minute penalty to pull one back after Andre Ayew handled. Then deep into added time, Reinildo rose highest to power home a dramatic header. The result sees Ghana in third above Mozambique only by goal difference.

With Egypt’s dramatic draw with Cape Verde in the other final group game of Group B, it leaves Ghana likely exiting at the first hurdle for the second straight AFCON. After failing to get a win at the tournament, questions will be asked of manager Chris Hughton despite his side dominating large periods. The draw ended Mozambique’s hopes too in their first AFCON since 2012.
