January 20, (THEWILL) – An action-packed Africa Cup of Nations match saw Angola claim a 3-2 victory, over tournament debutants Mauritania. Striker Dala Gelson was the hero, netting twice to help Angola top Group D.

Gelson opened the scoring on 30 minutes, only for Sidi Amar to equalise for Mauritania before half-time. After the interval, Angola regained control as Dala grabbed his second soon after the restart. Gilberto then added a third goal three minutes later to put Angola 3-1 ahead.

The match continued to enthral as Mauritania hit back through a long-range stunner from Aboubakary Koita on 58 minutes. Both sides had further chances in a gripping end-to-end contest, but Angola held on to claim an invaluable three points.

The result leaves Angola on 4 points from their opening two matches. Mauritania meanwhile suffered a second straight defeat, despite an impressive attacking display that yielded their first-ever Africa Cup Of Nations goal from open play.

On the evidence of this contest, both nations could still progress to the knockout stage. Group D remains wide open going into each team’s final match next week.
