February 16, (THEWILL) – Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, is gearing up to host the best marathon in Nigeria, according to the Director of Sports, Lucas Istifanus.
Speaking in Lagos, Istifanus said the upcoming Abuja International Marathon would be an opportunity to showcase Abuja, as a global tourist destination. After a thorough vetting process, the FCT approved the proposal submitted by Unicentral Resources, and the Minister of the FCT has granted approval for the marathon.
In addition to promoting tourism, Istifanus said that the FCT hopes to use the marathon to kick-start sports events in Abuja. The race has already generated significant interest, with over 35,000 local runners and 120 elite athletes expected to participate. The winner of the elite runner category will take home a prize of $55,000.
The marathon is being organised by Unicentral Resources, and the Managing Director, Susanna Ogunmiloyo, has expressed her gratitude to 7-Up Bottling Company for its support. The company is the first to back the Abuja International Marathon, and Ogunmiloyo called on other firms to follow suit. She also said that there would be incentives for local runners and students, with accommodation and transportation allowances provided.
The Abuja International Marathon is set to take place on April 29 and the race will start at the Abuja City Gate and round up at the Eagle Square.
