BEVERLY HILLS, May 20, (THEWILL) – The World Health Organisation (WHO) has the discovery of Zika virus in Africa.
Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Africa Director made the disclosure on Friday revealing that the virus was confirmed from a sequenced sample from Cape Verde.
Moeti said she would not recommend strict travel restrictions to try to stop the spread of the disease but said the information would help African countries to re-evaluate their level of risk and adapt and increase their levels of preparedness.
She added that the findings are of concern because it is further proof that the outbreak is spreading beyond South America and is on the doorstep of Africa.
Zika virus, found in mosquitoes, has been blamed for neurological disorders and birth abnormalities in Brazil and South America.
