June 04, (THEWILL) – Gabri Veiga shone as Celta Vigo achieved a remarkable 2-1 victory over reigning champions, Barcelona, on the thrilling final day of La Liga, securing their survival in the top flight of Spanish football.
Starting the match in 17th place, Celta understood that only a win would guarantee their place in the league, and they took control of the game with two decisive strikes from Veiga.
The 21-year-old forward found the bottom-left corner just before halftime, setting off jubilant celebrations at the Balaidos. In the 65th minute, Veiga’s cross fortuitously found its way into the net off the far post, extending Celta’s lead. Although Barcelona substitute Ansu Fati scored late in the game, Celta held on to secure a 13th-place finish.
Meanwhile, Real Valladolid were relegated by virtue of Celta’s climb up the standings, and Barcelona ended the season with a comfortable 10-point lead over runners-up Real Madrid.
At the final whistle both teams were relieved but it was Celta doing the most as they get another shot at playing football in the top division. Veiga had done enough to see them past the new champions and Celta manager Carlos Carvalhal and his team will be pleased with their part in making their stay in La Liga for another season possible.
