June 18, (THEWILL)- Authorities in Ghana have rescued two more Nigerian girls, the Chairman of the Nigerian Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa disclosed on Tuesday.
This is coming barely a week after 11 Nigerian girls trafficked to Ghana were rescued.
In a statement on Tuesday, Dabiri-Erewa, said the rescue operation, facilitated by the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Ghana, led by Chairman, NIDO Board of Trustees (BoT), Chief Calistus, has resulted in the safe custody of the two girls, who hail from Lagos and Edo States.
Reiterating the call for concerted efforts to combat human trafficking, Dabiri-Erewa added that the rescued girls are giving useful information aimed at tracking down their traffickers, who deceived them into prostitution.
She said arrangements are in place to get them back to Nigeria and hand them over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).
This recent rescue brings the total number of Nigerian girls rescued in Ghana to 13, following last week’s rescue of 11 girls from Imo and Plateau States, who were also trafficked under false promises of employment as Salesgirls but forced into prostitution.
