July 09, (THEWILL) – Pandemonium broke out in Oron town, Oron Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, as policemen, said to be members of the “team of the Inspector General of Police,” allegedly shot four men dead.

The incident occurred on Friday afternoon as the squad attacked members of the “Rice Drivers Association” who had been having their election.

THEWILL gathered that the exercise went peacefully as the drivers had concluded the electing of their Chairman and other executives, and were only waiting for the announcement of results and the celebration to follow, when tragedy struck.

The exercise was witnessed by some police officers led by the DPO of the area, CSP Benjamin Kunle.

“Members of the IGP Squad arrived at the venue shortly after the election and attempted arresting some of the people. They shot sporadically into the crowd and four members of the association were killed by bullets from police guns,” an eye witness stated.

The violent policemen thereafter fled the scene in their vehicle and headed back to Uyo, the state capital.

Speaking with THEWILL, an eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity for security reasons, added that the Commander of the Army based in Oro was equally present at the election.

However, the DPO, Benjamin Kunle, who was present at the scene, pleaded with Oro youths to remain calm as he was yet to ascertain whether the policemen were on official duty.

One of the policemen in the team was, however, identified with the nickname, “Abuja,” and reputed to be notorious for illegal duties.

Contacted for reaction, the Police Public Relations Officer in the State, Odiko MacDon, said he was yet to have the information, but promised to confirm it for necessary action.
