June 01, (THEWILL) – Marco Asensio has made the decision to join Paris Saint-Germain, the reigning champions of Ligue 1, on a free transfer once his contract with Real Madrid concludes.
During the triumphant UEFA Champions League campaigns of 2016/2017 and 2017/2018, Asensio had a peripheral role as a young player. Despite scoring 12 goals in all competitions in both the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 seasons, he failed to secure a regular starting position under manager Carlo Ancelotti, leading to his impending departure from the Bernabeu to France.
In May, Aston Villa had presented Asensio with a contract offer. However, Asensio’s agent, Jorge Mendes, has currently informed Unai Emery’s side that his client will be joining PSG instead to become part of a squad captained by Marquinhos and featuring star forward Kylian Mbappe. Prior to this decision, Asensio had attracted interest from various clubs including Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Juventus, and Marseille.
The talented former Mallorca player amassed 285 appearances for Real Madrid, scoring a total of 61 goals and clinching three La Liga titles and three UCL trophies, among other domestic and European honours. The move leaves Villa to continue actively seeking other options in La Liga to bolster their wide areas. Barcelona’s Ansu Fati and Ferran Torres, both of whom made limited contributions to Barcelona’s La Liga title triumph, have been identified as potential alternatives.
The news of Asensio’s imminent move to Parc des Princes coincides with the confirmation by manager Christophe Galtier that Lionel Messi will also be departing the Ligue 1 champions as his contract expires this summer.
