February 14, (THEWILL) – The Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF), is stepping up efforts to improve the country’s style of play by providing contracts to its national team players.
The move is aimed at increasing players’ output, participation, and promotion, with the goal of emulating the top cricket-playing African countries such as South Africa and Zimbabwe.
The contracts were announced by Taiwo Oriss, the NCF’s secretary-general, at the Federation’s Annual General Meeting in Abuja. The players signed into the national team will receive a salary, with the approval of allowances as a way of contracting them. The decision was made in November 2022, and has now been ratified.
The contract currently only covers the men’s senior team, with plans underway to get contracts for other teams. The Federation has divided the team into two groups, with only the first-team players considered for contracts.
Oriss hopes to involve the women’s and other teams in the first or second quarter of this year. The move is expected to boost the players’ morale and encourage them to put in more effort on the field.
