March 15, (THEWILL) – Ja Morant, a star player for the Memphis Grizzlies, has been suspended by the NBA for eight games without pay following an investigation into a video he live-streamed on social media.
In the video, Morant is seen holding a firearm in an intoxicated state at a Denver-area nightclub. The league determined that the gun did not belong to him, was not brought by him into the nightclub, and was not displayed by him beyond a brief period. In addition to the NBA’s investigation, the league stated that Colorado authorities did not find sufficient cause to charge Morant with a crime.
The suspension was handed down due to Morant’s conduct being detrimental to the league. A meeting took place between NBA Commissioner, Adam Silver and Morant, where he expressed remorse for his behaviour and vowed to be more responsible in the future.
The incident highlights the importance of players’ conduct both on and off the court, particularly given their influence on young fans. Morant’s suspension serves as a reminder that such behaviour will not be tolerated by the league, according to the NBA.
The Grizzlies will be without Morant for the next eight games, but he will be eligible to return on March 20, when they face off against the Dallas Mavericks.
