December 08, (THEWILL) – Ace movie director, C.J Obasi, will have one of his creative works, ‘Mami Wata’, featured at the 2023 Sundance film festival in the United States.

The festival is an annual film celebration, organised by the Sundance Institute and dubbed the largest independent film festival in the United States.

It is a meeting point for storytellers, documentaries, short films, episodic storytelling, lively filmmaker conversations and panel discussions.

Next year’s edition of the festival will hold in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States, from January 19 to 29.

According to the movie director, ‘Mami Wata’ will take part in its world cinema dramatic competition.

The movie is the first Nigerian film to be selected for the world cinema dramatic competition of the festival as stated by the movie director.

Produced by Oge Obasi, ‘Mami Wata’ follows the story of two sisters who rose to defend their village when it came under attack and restore the glory of a mermaid goddess to the land.

According to him, the film’s selection for the world cinema dramatic competition makes it a nominee for the festival’s world cinema grand jury prize, as well as directing, and special jury award.

Commenting on the development, Film One Distribution, distributors of the film, said the feat is a boost for the Nigerian film industry.

On his part, CJ Obasi said: “I am so very thrilled about this selection. It is such a great honour and honestly, it feels surreal. I mean, you put in the work and hope for the best, then when recognition comes, it is both remarkable and very fulfilling.

“It is also a challenge to keep raising the bar and inspiring others to do the same.”
