February 03, (THEWILL) – Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has suspended his campaign activities following a protest over petrol scarcity and the ongoing naira crunch.

THEWILL reports that youths in their hundred on Friday, took to some major streets of the Ibadan metropolis to protest the scarcity of fuel and new naira notes.

The youths, armed with dangerous weapons including iron rods, stones, plastic chairs, and broken bottles, blocked a portion of the road linking Bodija to the Oyo State Secretariat.

The protesters, according to reports, forced their way into the State Secretariat and headed straight to the Governor’s office, where one Inspector of police, who was on duty at the main entrance of the Governor’s office, was injured.

THEWILL gathered that the injured officer, Inspector Dynasty Layemo, was stoned by the angry mobs while trying to prevent them from gaining access to the main Governor’s office complex.

In his response to the development, Governor Makinde, at the flag off of the Omi-Adio-Ido Road on Friday, announced the suspension of his campaign activities.

A statement issued on Friday, by Dr Wasiu Olatubosun, Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, said the suspension was in solidarity with the people over the harrowing experiences in recent times over unending fuel and new naira-note crisis in the state.

The Governor said the decision was taken because he was elected to protect the interests and well beings of the citizens of the state.

He directed leaders of the party in the state to suspend further political activities.

“Makinde’s love for his people necessitated this unprecedented move, at this time.

“We urge all residents and citizens of the State to remain calm as we navigate through this difficult period together,” it states.
