Lewandowski Believes Few New Signings Can Make Barcelona More Competitive

March 18, (THEWILL) – Robert Lewandowski has called for Barcelona to make a few new signings this summer to increase their competitiveness in the upcoming season.

Despite the club’s financial difficulties, they spent almost €160m on new players last year and raised nearly €50m through sales. However, due to caps on spending power, some new signings, such as Jules Kounde, were not able to register with La Liga until after the start of the season.

Barcelona had to activate various “economic levers” to secure additional income, selling off a portion of their future earnings. Although the strategy has been successful so far, with the team currently leading La Liga with just 13 games remaining, they have struggled in the UEFA Champions League. For the second year in a row, they were knocked out in the group stage, and they failed to progress past the first knockout round of the Europa League.

Lewandowski, who joined the team from Bayern Munich for €45m and has scored 25 goals in all competitions, believes that there is still room for improvement. Speaking recently about their progress, he said: “There is a good team. Maybe one [or] two changes make this team, not perfect, but more competitive.

“Sometimes we talk about small things, but if you change this, it will be even more spectacular. This season we had problems in the Champions League, and that is what we must correct, but up to now, we are not ready to fight at the highest level for [all] the three titles: Champions League, La Liga, and Copa del Rey.”
