April 13, (THEWILL) – The Chief Medical Director of First Fertility Hospital, Makurdi, Dr Stephen Hwande, has attributed the rising cases of infertility in the society to late marriage, high alcohol consumption and abortion practices.

Hwande, who is a Consultant Gynecologist, was reacting to the World Health Organization (WHO) report, which suggests that one in every six persons in the society worldwide has infertility issues.

According to him, the most productive age in a woman is between 18 and 25 years, pointing out that when a woman gets married above such age bracket, the chances of not bearing children increase and a man of above 40 years, who gets married to a woman of above 39 years, will also experience infertility.

“In the past, people marry earlier between the ages of 16, 18, 20, 22 or 24, but these days, because of advancement, people want to go to university and other social factors. You see a man at 35 or 40 getting marriage or a woman at 35. So, even before marriage, infertility lingers and it increases with age,” he said.

Hwande pointed out that when the tubes of the female gender are damaged as a result of pelvic infections or abortion during youthful age, it will also lead to infertility.

“Youths and women, who engage in regular high intake of alcohol and drugs, as well as multiple sex partners, will experience poor sperm perimeter and infertility,” he started.

Doctor Hwande, therefore, advised people, especially the youths, to improve on their health and desist from alcohol and abortion, as well as treat infection immediately when detected to prevent it from damaging the tubes.
