September 27, (THEWILL) – Atletico Madrid maintained their unbeaten run in La Liga with a last-gasp 1-0 victory over Celta Vigo at Balaidos on Thursday evening.

Julian Alvarez scored the decisive goal in the final minutes to snatch all three points for Diego Simeone’s side.

The home team had the better chances in a tightly contested first half, with youngster Williot Swedberg and veteran striker Iago Aspas both going close. Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak made a crucial save just before half-time to deny Aspas and keep the scores level at the break.

Celta continued to press in the second half, with new signing Borja Iglesias forcing another fine stop from Oblak. However, Atletico’s defence held firm under pressure, living up to their reputation as La Liga’s meanest backline this season.

The visitors struggled to create clear-cut chances for much of the match, but substitute Alvarez provided the cutting edge when it mattered most. The Argentine striker poked home Antoine Griezmann’s inviting cross in the closing stages to break Celta hearts and extend their winless run against Atletico to 12 games.

The result keeps Atletico’s unbeaten start to the 2024/2025 La Liga campaign intact. Simeone will be pleased with his team’s defensive resilience and ability to grind out a victory, while Celta are left to rue missed opportunities despite an impressive performance.
