Judge Binds UEFA, FIFA From Punishing Last 3 Standing Euro Super League Clubs

June 07, (THEWILL)- In the continuing saga of the aftermath of the defunct European Super League, while the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) keeps the disciplinary proceedings for the trio of clubs that refuse to rescind participation going, a report from Switzerland has tempered the extent of what might come out of it.

The Swiss Ministry of Justice has made clear that no retaliatory actions can be taken against Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus by either world football governing body, FIFA, or its European counterpart, UEFA.

As reported by THEWILL, these three big clubs, of the top leagues in Italy and Spain, are the last of the 12 that initially signed up as founder members and who stubbornly remained affiliated with the collapsed project. Their recalcitrance is expected to cause the hammer of UEFA to fall on them via some form of penalties like point deductions or outright suspensions from UEFA-organised competitions.

A report monitored from Cadena SER, Spain’s premier radio news network, stated that the two bodies of UEFA and FIFA were directly informed of the Swiss Ministry of Justice’s position concerning actions of retaliation against these three sides.

As THEWILL reported in May, a disciplinary file was opened against the trio by UEFA on May 25, and the results were expected in the week before Euro 2020 began in earnest, which commencement date is set for Friday, June 11.

The judgement came from Judge Manuel Ruiz de Lara, who had already ruled on the case in the Spanish Court of Justice. He it was who raised the question to the Court of Justice of the European Union as to whether UEFA and FIFA are actually exercising a monopoly on the sport.

It remains to be seen how UEFA will play around this when the report of its disciplinary proceedings are turned in.
