December 07, (THEWILL) – Following Belgium’s unexpectedly poor performance in the 2022 World Cup, team captain, Eden Hazard, has announced that he is retiring from international football.

THEWILL recalls that Belgium finished third in Group F behind Morocco and Croatia, with Hazard featuring in all three games. His announcement comes on the heels of the decision of Belgium manager, Roberto Martinez, announcing to leave his position.

In the Instagram post of the announcement, Hazard wrote: “Today I turn a page. Thanks for your love. Thank you for your unparalleled support. Thank you for all the joyful moments we have shared since 2008.

“Today I decided to put an end to my career as an international. The next generation is ready. I’m going to miss you so much.”

Following rumours of an altercation involving him and teammates, Kevin De Bruyne and Jan Vertonghen, Hazard was compelled to deny rumours of teammate infighting during the competition, following comments about the aged players in the team affecting their chances to win the World Cup made by De Bruyne.
