October 09, (THEWILL) – Mason Greenwood opened his goalscoring account for Getafe on Sunday, netting in the 2-2 draw with Celta Vigo in La Liga. The 22-year-old Englishman, on loan from Manchester United, drifted unmarked to the back post in the 33rd minute to turn Borja Mayoral’s low cross into the roof of the net.
It was Greenwood’s first goal since scoring for Manchester United in their 3-1 win over Brentford on January 19, 2022. Greenwood was making his fifth appearance for Getafe since joining on deadline day. Borja Mayoral had given Getafe an early lead before Jonathan Bamba levelled for Celta Vigo after Iago Aspas failed to convert a penalty.
Getafe were reduced to 10 men when Domingos Duarte was dismissed, but Greenwood put the visitors ahead shortly after. Jorgen Strand Larsen equalised for Celta Vigo before halftime and neither side could find a winner in the second period. Greenwood was withdrawn after an hour, as the game finished 2-2.
THEWILL recalls that Greenwood became available for transfer in August after Manchester United ended plans to reinstate him, following an internal investigation into unproven assault accusations against the player. He denies all alleged offences against him discontinued by the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service in February.
The 2-2 draw leaves Getafe 11th in La Liga with two wins and four draws from their opening nine matches. They return to action on 21 October at home against Real Betis after the international break.
