EFCC Transfers Obiano To Abuja After Arrest

March 18, (THEWILL) – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has transferred the immediate-past governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, from its Lagos zonal office to its headquarters in Abuja.

Spokesperson of the Anti-graft agency, Wilson Uwujaren, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday.

“The ex-governor was arrested in Lagos, but was moved to Abuja this morning (Friday)”, Uwujaren said.

THEWILL had reported that the commission arrested Obiano at about 8:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport, Lagos State.

He was on his way to Houston, Texas, US, after handing over to his successor, Gov Charles Chukwuma Soludo.

On why Obiano was arrested, the commission said he had been on its watchlist for some months, adding that his immunity as a governor prevented his arrest until he handed over to his successor.

Uwujaren further stated that the commission had requested the Nigeria Immigration Service to provide information on the former governor’s movement out of the country from airports, or other points of exit from the country.

As at the time of filing this report, the EFCC was yet to release details of Obiano’s offence and the exact time he was flown into Abuja.

But a source at the commission who asked not to be named because they were not authorised to speak to the press on the matter, said the former governor, would be interrogated on issues involving allegations of corruption, details of which cannot yet be independently ascertained by THEWILL as at the time of report.
