March 20, (THEWILL)- Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has undergone successful surgery to treat a meniscus tear in his right knee, the club announced on Wednesday.
The 31-year-old Belgian sustained the injury during training on Tuesday. Courtois will begin his recovery process in the coming days but is expected to face several weeks on the sidelines.
This setback comes as a major blow for the shot-stopper, who was nearing a return to action after spending months recovering from an ACL tear in his left knee suffered in August.
Despite his lengthy absence, Courtois made 31 La Liga appearances for Real Madrid last season and was a pivotal figure in their campaign. However, the former Chelsea goalkeeper has yet to feature for Los Blancos in the current 2023/2024 season.
Real Madrid currently top La Liga standings, holding an eight-point lead over perennial rivals Barcelona. They are scheduled to host Athletic Bilbao on March 31, a fixture where stand-in keeper Andriy Lunin will take charge between the sticks while Courtois rehabilitates from his latest knee problem.
