January 06, (THEWILL) – Gregg Berhalter, Head Coach of the United States men’s national soccer team, is under investigation by US Soccer, following allegations that he kicked his wife during an argument in 1991 but wants to keep his job.
The investigation was initiated after information about the incident was shared with US Soccer Sporting Director, Earnie Stewart, by Gio Reyna’s mother during the 2022 World Cup.
Reyna, a midfielder for Borussia Dortmund, was expected to play a significant role in the US team’s World Cup campaign, but ultimately did not start any games. Berhalter’s contract expired at the end of December, and Assistant Coach, Anthony Hudson, will lead the team while a “technical review” is conducted.
Berhalter has expressed a desire to continue as Head Coach, citing the team’s potential and his desire to change the world’s perception of American soccer. He also admitted regret over how he handled the situation with Reyna, saying he “wouldn’t have told that story” if given the chance to do it over again.
He noted, “Trust is something that takes a long time to build but can go away really quickly. You have to be consistent in who you are, and you have to have clear values. And if you are, they can see that. My bond with the players is very strong and it’s about maintaining that bond. And I think the players and the staff know who I am and what I stand for.”
