June 11, (THEWILL) – Inter Milan midfielder, Nicolo Barella, has ended speculation over his future by signing a new long-term contract with the Serie A club. The 27-year-old Italy international has put pen to paper on a fresh deal that will keep him at the San Siro until 2029.

Barella’s existing contract was due to expire in June 2026 and he had been linked with a potential move to the English Premier League. Manchester United, Liverpool and Newcastle United were among the English clubs reportedly interested in securing the services of the combative midfielder. However, Barella has committed his future to Inter Milan for the next five years.

The new contract is a reward for Barella’s impressive performances since joining Inter initially on loan from Cagliari in 2019. He has made 235 appearances for the Nerazzurri, helping them win two Serie A titles, two Coppa Italia trophies, the 2019/2020 Europa League and the 2022/2023 UEFA Champions League. Barella expressed his delight at extending his stay, saying he never had any doubts and believes in Inter’s project.

Barella is currently on international duty with Italy ahead of Euro 2024. However, he is facing a race against time to be fit for the holders’ opening group game against Albania on Saturday after missing recent warm-up matches with a muscle injury. Despite training separately on Tuesday, Italy head coach Luciano Spalletti expects the influential midfielder to be available for the European Championship opener in Dortmund.
