May 14, (THEWILL) – Real Madrid continued their unbeaten run with a 1-0 victory over Getafe on Saturday, with Marco Asensio’s brilliant 20-yard strike securing the win at Santiago Bernabeu.
The result keeps Los Blancos in the race for a top-two finish in La Liga, although it was obvious in recent weeks that the defending champions had already shifted their focus to defending their UEFA Champions League crown. This was due to the seeming unassailable gap that Xavi Hernandez and his Barcelona side had maintained in Spain’s top flight.
With that in mind, Carlo Ancelotti fielded a much-changed side for the League game, resting key players ahead of Wednesday’s crucial European clash with Manchester City. It was no surprise then that the first half was a lacklustre affair, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut chances.
However, Asensio’s strike with 20 minutes to play proved to be the difference between the two sides. Although Vinicius Junior had a late goal ruled out for offside, Madrid held on for the win with ease, while Getafe remain in a relegation battle.
The Spanish giants will be looking to improve upon their 1-1 result against Manchester City in their UCL second leg on Wednesday while Getafe will face Elche in their next league fixture.
